Qui sotto invece ci concentriamo su una cosa sola: gli strumenti. Ho aggiornato e ampliato la sezione Trend & Tools con quello che uso, che ho testato o che ha senso mettere in valigia quest'estate app, oggetti fisici e soluzioni a costo zero, tutti utilizzabili sia in Europa che altrove.

📈 TREND & INSIGHTS & DIGITAL TOOLS

La tendenza: la tecnologia di viaggio sta andando in due direzioni opposte, ed entrambe ci riguardano. Da una parte tutto diventa digitale e invisibile: la SIM non si compra più in aeroporto, si scarica; i biglietti vivono nel telefono. Dall'altra cresce il ritorno all'analogico per i bambini: player audio senza schermo, giochi magnetici, taccuini. La sintesi per noi genitori: digitale per la logistica, analogico per i figli.

Tutti gli strumenti qui sotto sono utilizzabili sia in Italia/Europa o UK e anche negli USA. Il simbolo 🟢 indica che lo strumento è gratuito (o ha una versione base gratuita che basta e avanza).

Prima di partire

• 🟢 PackPoint (packpnt.com) Genera la lista bagagli in base a destinazione, meteo e durata. Utile perché elimina il "cosa dimentico?" alla radice: la lista se la fa da sola, tu spunti. Gratuita; la versione premium (acquisto una tantum di pochi euro)
• 🟢 TripIt (tripit.com) Inoltri le email di conferma (voli, hotel, noleggio) e costruisce l'itinerario completo da solo. Utile perché tutta la logistica del viaggio sta in un unico posto, anche offline. La versione base gratuita copre tutto l'essenziale.
• 🟢 Wanderlog (wanderlog.com) Pianificazione collaborativa dell'itinerario: mappa, tappe, budget condiviso. Utile perché puoi pianificare il viaggio insieme ai figli più grandi, non solo per loro. Gratuita nella versione base.
• Airalo (airalo.com) eSIM digitali per oltre 200 destinazioni, si installano dall'app in pochi minuti. Utile perché arrivi a destinazione già connesso, senza roaming a sorpresa né code in aeroporto. L'app è gratuita, le eSIM si pagano
• Timeshifter (timeshifter.com) Piani personalizzati contro il jet lag basati su luce, sonno e caffeina. Il primo piano è gratuito, poi a pagamento.

In viaggio

• 🟢 Google Maps offline (google.com/maps) Scarica le mappe della zona prima di partire. Utile perché il momento in cui ti serve la mappa è esattamente quello in cui non c'è campo.
• 🟢 Google Translate (translate.google.com) Traduzione istantanea, anche puntando la fotocamera su menu e cartelli, con lingue scaricabili offline.
• 🟢 FlightAware (flightaware.com) Stato dei voli in tempo reale con avvisi gratuiti su ritardi, cancellazioni e cambi di gate. Utile perché spesso sai del ritardo prima che lo annunci la compagnia.
• 🟢 XE Currency (xe.com) Convertitore di valuta con tassi aggiornati, funziona anche offline con l'ultimo tasso salvato.
• 🟢 Flush Toilet Finder (toiletfinder.net) Trova il bagno pubblico più vicino. Sembra banale finché non hai un bambino di quattro anni in una città sconosciuta. Poi diventa l'app più importante del telefono.

Below, we focus on one thing only: the tools. I've updated and expanded the Trend & Tools section with what I use, what I've tested, or what's genuinely worth packing this summer — apps, physical objects and zero-cost solutions, all usable in Europe and beyond.

📈 TREND & APPROFONDIMENTI

The trend: travel technology is moving in two opposite directions, and both matter to us. On one side, everything is becoming digital and invisible: you no longer buy a SIM at the airport, you download it; your tickets live in your phone. On the other, there's a growing return to analog for kids: screen-free audio players, magnetic games, notebooks. The takeaway for us parents: digital for the logistics, analog for the kids.

All the tools below work in Italy/Europe and the UK as well as in the USA. The 🟢 symbol means the tool is free (or has a free version that's more than enough).

Before you leave

• 🟢 PackPoint (packpnt.com) Builds your packing list based on destination, weather and trip length. Useful because it kills the "what am I forgetting?" question at the root: the list writes itself, you just tick. Free; the premium version is a one-time purchase of a few dollars.
• 🟢 TripIt (tripit.com) Forward your confirmation emails (flights, hotels, car rental) and it builds your full itinerary on its own. Useful because all your travel logistics live in one place, even offline. The free version covers everything essential.
• 🟢 Wanderlog (wanderlog.com) Collaborative trip planning: map, stops, shared budget. Useful because you can plan the trip together with your older kids, not just for them. Free in its basic version.
• Airalo (airalo.com) Digital eSIMs for over 200 destinations, installed from the app in minutes. Useful because you land already connected — no surprise roaming charges, no airport queues. The app is free; the eSIMs are paid.
• Timeshifter (timeshifter.com) Personalized jet lag plans based on light, sleep and caffeine. Your first plan is free, then paid.

On the road

• 🟢 Google Maps offline (google.com/maps) Download the maps of your destination before you go. Useful because the moment you need a map is exactly the moment you have no signal.
• 🟢 Google Translate (translate.google.com) Instant translation, including pointing your camera at menus and signs, with languages you can download offline.
• 🟢 FlightAware (flightaware.com) Real-time flight status with free alerts for delays, cancellations and gate changes. Useful because you often know about the delay before the airline announces it.
• 🟢 XE Currency (xe.com) Currency converter with up-to-date rates, and it works offline with the last saved rate.
• 🟢 Flush Toilet Finder (toiletfinder.net) Finds the nearest public restroom. It sounds trivial until you have a four-year-old in an unfamiliar city. Then it becomes the most important app on your phone.
