How to Educate Children about Sports (and Being Athletic)?

What does it mean to educate children about sports? How parents can support their child in choosing the right sport? These are some of the question we will try to answer in this newsletter.

Why educate children about sports?

  • Sports are a great way for children to socialize, breaking down language, cultural, and ability barriers. They help all kids come together. Sports also connect families, schools, coaches, teachers, and the community, promoting balanced growth and integration for children and teens.

"Educating children about sports also means educating about failure"

  • Michael Jordan once said: "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times. I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over again in my life. And that's why I succeed." We should see mistakes and losses as chances for grow and to change how we think. This idea, called the pedagogy of error, is very old. Even Socrates said we learn from mistakes. If we naturally accepted errors, we wouldn't need special times to deal with frustration.

How to Choose the Right Sport?

  • Before discussing sports, we must talk about movement, specifically educational movement, essential for the psychological and social growth of every individual. Unfortunately, in recent years, we have seen an increase in sedentary behavior, which needs to be addressed as soon as the child starts walking. At this stage, it's all about play; everything begins and ends with the playful aspect of activity. In the early years of life, playing is every child's main job. Cultivating an education in movement from early childhood will make the approach to the sports world easier.

"When children grow up, they will carry with them this love for movement, health, and play."

  • To choose the right sport for children, start by focusing on fun and social play when they are young. Let kids try different activities to see what they enjoy. Consider family schedules, available time, and local options. Look at their interests and avoid pushing them into specific sports. Encourage them to experiment, watch what they like, and join in their sports activities for shared learning experiences.
